Functions

  • LAND AND WATER 
  1. This department is saddled with the responsibilities of overseeing activities and service delivery as it affects Land and Water.  
  2. In line with Environment and Health pillar of the THEMES Agenda, the relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to meet are 3, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. The Department is empowered to monitor activities and public complaints from Hotels/ leisure houses, restaurants, bake houses, Bars as regards service delivery to the Public.
  3. We exhibit fair conflict resolution with appropriate laid down mechanisms.
  4. Other responsibilities include;
  • 1. Investigates public complaints on land and water environmental issues, to ensure compliance to the state’s environmental laws, regulations, guidelines and standards.
  • 2. Issuance of fines/penalties to offending companies under the Polluters Pay Principle (PPP) and in conjunction with Monitoring, Compliance and Enforcement Unit.
  • 3. Issuance of Discharge Permit in conjunction with Laboratory services department and Engineering unit.
  • 4. Set standards of discharge and effluent to land and water resources, in conjunction with Legal, Engineering unit, Lab, Research & Development Department.
  • 5. Monitor and report  the effect of all classes of waste disposal on land and water resources
  • 6. Conduct periodic assessments and maintain baseline statistics on soil and water quality across the State, in conjunction with Natural Resource Protection and Laboratory Services.
  • 7. Oversees mediations on land and water pollution environmental issues between aggrieved parties to proffer prompt abatement options in conjunction with relevant departments and units.
  • 8. Directs the enforcement of land and water infractions in conjunction with Monitoring, Compliance and Enforcement department.
  • 9. Spearheads public enlightenment and advocacy on land and water pollution.
  • 10. Work in conjunction with Federal and State Parastatals involved in the management and protection of water resources, e.g. NIWA, NIMASA, LASWA, NESREA, etc.
  • 11. Provides expert support to relevant MDAs in terms of evidence gathering, Investigations, reporting and expert testimony of environmental infractions guided by the agency’s position and laws on the matter.
  • 12. Intervenes and protects against the release of waste in conjunction with relevant agency departments, units, federal and state MDAs.

Answer: Yes, you can. The Department is empowered to monitor activities and public complaints from Hotels and leisure houses, Restaurants, Bake houses, Bars as regards service delivery to the Public.
Q2. Please who handles water hyacinth on the water ways?
Answer: Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) is responsible for clearing and harvesting

  Q3. Water Hyacinth on waterways in the State to further ensure safety.
How discrete can your Agency be in protecting environment whistle blowers?
Answer: 100% discrete. The whistle blower can also remain anonymous yet the complaint will be attended to 100%.

Q4. Is there any remuneration for exposure of environmental crime?
Answer: Recommendation letter from the Agency in appreciation.
Q5. Can your Agency come to my community or Local Government for sensitization?
Answer: Yes, we can. Sensitization and Advocacy on environment are part of our responsibilities to promote sustainable environment.

Q6. How do you manage solid waste properly?
Answer: Sort solid waste and dispose with LAWMA.

Q7. How do you handle used oil from generator?
Answer:
Avoid disposal of used oil into public drains as this will affect the aquatic lives.

Q8. How does your facility curb fat from the kitchen liquid waste?
Answer: Install a functional fat trap to contain fats from the kitchen liquid waste.

Q9. What do you consider as the greatest source of Land and Water pollution in the State?
Answer: Plastics, Nylons and scrap metals.

Q1O. Which of the following water channels do you employ for drinking?
Answer: Bottled and Sachet water, but, should be properly disposed.
