LABORATORY DEPARTMENT – SHONIBARE, OLABISI A. – GL.16

Functions

LABORATORY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
THE FIRST ISO-CERTIFIED GOVERNMENT-OWNED LABORATORY IN NIGERIA
ISO 9001:2015

This department is the bedrock of verifiable empirical data, for informed policy formulation and is divided into seven (7) individual laboratories and responsible for the collection of samples for analyses from various sources in the state such as;

1. Effluent/Wastewater samples from manufacturing facilities to determine pollution load and assess their compliance status to effluent limitation standards, thereby assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of the installed effluent treatment plants in facilities.

2. Water samples from public taps and boreholes in industrial facilities, private houses, and other sources. This is done to determine the potability of such water.

3.. Air quality and noise assessment of households, industries, power generating sets, and machineries.

4. Soil and ludge assessment.
The department also monitors, surveys, and determines the pollution load of the State water bodies (rivers, streams, and the lagoon).

The Agency through the department monitors various dumpsites in the State by collecting leachates and soil samples from the dumpsites for analysis.

These functions are carried out with a mind to assist the state government with empirical data to formulate better-informed policy for the Environment in the state, thus ensuring the ‘H’ of the ‘T H E M E S AGENDA of the present administration, through the database analysis carried out on various samples analyzed over time.

The Agency achieves the above-stated functions through its seven (7) laboratories;

1. Potable Water laboratory – This is the unit where the potability of water samples from all parts of the state is tested to ensure that the citizenry has access to potable water at all times.

2. Waste Water Laboratory – This unit is saddled with ensuring that process or wastewater from the industrial facilities in the state are treated to acceptable standards in line with best practices.

3. Micro-Biology Laboratory – This unit is one of the two servicing labs of the agency, as it complements the department by offering specialized service in analyzing the Microbial load of samples in line with set standards.

4. Air and Noise Laboratory – This unit is in charge of monitoring and measurement of the quality of air that the citizenry is exposed, to guide against the spread of airborne diseases caused by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, incomplete combustion of refined products, and dust particles.

5. Land and Soil Laboratory – This unit ensures that the soil is protected against pollution for agricultural purposes.

6. Heavy Metal/Sensitive Laboratory – This unit is the second servicing unit of the department that ensures the concentration of trace, heavy, or sensitive elements is within acceptable limits as specified.

7.Toxicology Laboratory – This unit is entrusted with identifying the concentration of toxins in wastewater generated by the industries, against industrial pollution that can affect water bodies.

NOTE: Microbiology and Sensitive Laboratories are service laboratories for Potable water, Wastewater, and Land and Soil laboratories.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS;

Answer: Yes the Lab helps the citizens to test the potability (Quality) of their water, this is done at a fee, subsidized by the government.

Question: Is the Lab certified?
Answer: Yes, The Lab is ISO 9001:2015 certified.

Question: Does the Lab regulate the activities of other Labs?
Answer: The Lab is in conjunction with the Research and Development Department finalizing the process of Accrediting or Certification of labs in the environmental sphere within the state.

Question: Does the lab collaborate with other labs, Academia, and Consultants?
Answer: The Lab is always and ever ready to collaborate with like-minded entities in the area of fostering the well-being of the environment and ultimately the populace through joint science-based research work to proffer solutions to pressing needs, Examples abound.
