The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) visited the construction site of the Lekki deep sea Port, located within the dedicated Lekki Free Trade Zone, at Ibeju Lekki, to ensure that environmental guidelines are followed and mitigative measures are incorporated to avoid degradation of the environment.
The General Manager of the agency, Dr Folapo Fasawe expressed that it’s pertinent for her agency to make the routine visits and ensure that the exercise adopts friendly environmental practices devoid of all environmental degradation and pollution, especially to the immediate host communities.
“As the police of the environment, the protection of the environment comes first at the outset of any construction project, Every stage of the construction process has a measurable environmental impact, therefore, our purposeful routine visit, aim at mitigating and reducing environmental impacts produced during the construction phases and future.
We must not wait for the completion of work at sites, before we moved in, our impact must be felt at all stages in order to ensure sustainable environmental best practices, all through the duration of the exercise.”Fasawe reiterated.
The monitoring exercise, which was carried out by the Lekki Zone team of the agency, led by the zonal head, Mrs Yetunde Atoyebi was to ascertain their level of compliance to the state outlined environmental protection guidelines and earnestly provides solutions to any detected unfriendly conducts
The team were conducted round by Mr Adura and Mr Mathew, who respectively intimated the team of the various stages of the on going construction and detailed action plan on site environmental management policy
