The Lagos state Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) went tough on Monday shutting down three churches and two mosques in different parts of the metropolis over noise pollution. The places of worship that came under the hammer were Christ Chosen Church, Onipanu, Assemblies of God Church, Ikeja, Evangelical Apostolic Church, Darusalam Mosque at Sabo, Yaba and Ayegbesin Mosque at Mafoluku Oshodi.
LASEPA officials, backed by the Lagos state Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, stormed the affected churches and mosques to affect the closure. The team, which was led by Kayode Bello, a senior official of LASEPA, reiterated the drive by the agency to rid the state of unnecessary noise pollution.
LASEPA’s General Manager, Mr. Rasheed Shabi, explained that the closure of the worship centres became imperative after several notices issued to them were disregarded. He said that the affected churches and mosques had rebuffed meetings called by the agency. “The agency’s stance on noise pollution has been communicated to all worship centres. The level of noise pollution allowed is 55 decibels during the day and between 42 to 45 decibels at night.
“They were served notices to remove the horns and loudspeakers placed outside so as not to disturb the public with their activities, but they refused,” Shabi said.
